Hee Jin Kang

Senior Director, Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering

Dr. Hee Jin Kang, as the senior director at KRISO, is overseeing research on marine carbon neutrality. Since obtaining his Ph.D. in Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering from Seoul National University in 2011, he has been dedicated to developing technologies for achieving marine carbon neutrality. He is also an expert member of the Transportation Division of the Presidential Commission on Carbon Neutrality and Green Growth in Korea and a registered expert in carbon neutrality and marine disaster management in the UN’s 3rd World Ocean Assessment (WOA III).

Geun-Tae Yim

Director of MASS Remote Control Center, Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering

Dr. Geun-Tae Yim was educated as naval architect and has been working in the field of ship hydrodynamics as a researcher in KRISO for decades. He participated in the KASS (Korea Autonomous Surface Ship) project at planning stage and has been in charge of one of KASS projects titled as ‘Development of evaluation and validation testbed for autonomous ship technology’.

He holds a position as director of ASVERC (Autonomous Ship Verification & Evaluation Research Centre) since new organisation was set in April 2022. Currently he is working on various scenario-based MASS sea-trials and centre’ functionality expansion.

Hyung Chul Yoon

Principal Researcher, Korea Institute of Energy Research

Dr. Hyung Chul Yoon is a chief and principal researcher in the Clean Fuel Laboratory at KIER and the group leader of green ammonia synthesis and utilization. He is one co-founders of the Korean Clean Ammonia Association (KCAA) and has served as its deputy director. Notably, Hyundai heavy industry and Hynndai Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, Korean register are among the members of KCAA. Dr. Yoon is also a professor at the University of Science and Tehcnology and an adjunct profesor in Chung-Nam National University.

His primary research interests focus on electrochemical and thermochemical catalysts and processes for low-pressure and low-temperature synthesis of green ammonia, highly efficient hydrgen produciton process from ammonia cracking, the safe utilization of ammonia, and hydrogen purification processes. He has publised more than 70 SCI peer-reviewed papers in journals such as Appl. Catal., Catal, Chem Eng J, Energy Environ Sci. Additionally he holds more than 130 domestic and international patents.

Dr. Yoon received his Ph.D. in mechanical engineering department from the University of California Davis in 2008. After his Ph.D., he joined the dept. of mechnical and process engineering at ETH Zurich, Switzerland as a postdoctoral reseacher. Before joining KIER in 2011, his main research areas were hydrogen production via steam/authtothermal reformation of hydrocarbon fuels and thermochemical production of solar fuels.

Andreas Nordseth

Director General, Danish Maritime Authority (DMA)

Andreas Nordseth is Director General of the Danish Maritime Authority (DMA); a position he has held since 2009. The DMA is a Government agency under the Ministry of Industry, Business and Financial Affairs in Denmark.

Today Andreas Nordseth is Chairman of the Consultative Shipping Group (CSG) and a Board Member of the Danish Maritime Fund and the Advisory Board for Executive MBA in Shipping & Logistics at Copenhagen Business School. He is former Chairman of the Administrative Board at the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) and former Governor at the World Maritime University (WMU).

Takeshi Nakazawa

Professor, Executive Director, International Association of Maritime Universities

Takeshi Nakazawa has been involved in both Maritime Education and Training and Maritime Technology since he graduated from the department of marine engineering at Kobe University of Mercantile Marine in 1980. He first joined the Institute for Sea Training of the Japanese Ministry of Transport as a training instructor for Marine Engineering cadets on board training ships. During his life at sea for 7 years, he obtained the chief engineer’s certificate then he returned to the department of marine engineering of his alma mater in 1987 as a research associate.

After that point, his research activities concentrated on Thermal Power Systems, particularly thermal control systems in space, by which he obtained his Ph.D. from Kobe University in 1995. During 1996-1997 he was a visiting professor at the University of Saskatchewan in Canada, supported by the Ministry of Education in Japan. Although the main research topic was in the field of mechanical engineering, he maintained an interest in the fields of marine engineering.

Dr. Nakazawa first contracted with World Maritime University from 1997 to 1999 as the associate professor of the Marine Engineering stream in Maritime Education and Training course. This experience made him realize the importance of education and training processes to develop maritime safety and environment protection throughout the world. After returning to Kobe University, he was involved in several international projects in terms of the improvement of MET systems through international organizations such as International Maritime Organization, International Maritime Lecturers Association, International Association of Maritime Universities and Japan International Co-operation Agency.

Takeshi obtained his position as the Professor of the Nippon Foundation Chair in Maritime Technology at World Maritime University in October 2003. He has mainly overseen the technical subjects in MSc programs both at World Maritime University and Dalian Maritime University in China. He is currently serving as the Secretary of the International Association of Maritime Universities with 17% of his time devoted to WMU as a professor.

Aykut Ölcer

Professor, Nippon Foundation Chair, Director of Maritime Research, Head of Maritime Energy Management,
World Maritime University

Professor Dr. Aykut I. ÖLÇER is a naval architect and marine engineer holding the Nippon Foundation Professorial Chair in “Marine Technology and Innovation” at the World Maritime University (WMU). He is currently the Director of Research of WMU as well as the Head of Maritime Energy Management Specialization (MSc program). He served as the Editor-in-Chief of WMU Journal of Maritime Affairs (JOMA) and Book Series between February’17 and February’19. Prior to joining WMU, he worked at Newcastle University (England), University of Strathclyde (Scotland) and Istanbul Technical University (Türkiye) within the fields of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering. He played an important role in Newcastle University’s first international branch in Singapore to help the University achieve its objectives in teaching/learning and research activities in the UG and PG programs of Marine Technology.

For many years, he has conducted research independently/jointly and collaborated with other researchers, academics and students all over the world, in particular from Europe and Asia. Dr Ölçer was involved in numerous EU funded FP5, FP6, FP7, Horizon 2020 and EU Horizon projects and IMO projects as well as IAMU and regional projects in Scandinavia. He currently leads the research priority areas, namely “Maritime Energy Management” and “Marine Technology and Innovation”, at WMU. He has published results of his research in leading, internationally peer-reviewed journals such as “Journal of Cleaner Production”, “Fuel Processing Technology”, “European Journal of Operational Research”, “Computers and Operational Research”, “Applied Soft Computing”, “Transportation Research Part D: Transport and Environment” and so on. He is the main Editor of the book “Trends and Challenges in Maritime Energy Management (https://link.springer.com/book/10.1007/978-3-319-74576-3)”, which was one of the most downloaded Springer books in 2018. He delivered keynote speeches all over the world, in particular in the discipline of maritime decarbonisation.

Gerardo Borromeo

CEO, Philippine Transmarine Carriers

Gerardo A. Borromeo is the Chief Executive Officer of the Philippine Transmarine Carriers (PTC) Group of Companies, a diversified company with strategic initiatives and business interests in shipping and maritime services, real estate, energy and fuel distribution, healthcare and aviation. He serves as Vice President of the Filipino Shipowners Association (FSA) and has been reappointed as Vice Chairman of the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS). Mr. Borromeo is also a member of the Board of Governors of the World Maritime University (WMU) in Sweden and serves as Chairman of its Executive Board. For two consecutive terms, he served as President of InterManager, an international trade association of global ship managers; the only Filipino to be elected to this leading post. He was also the First Filipino to be awarded the distinguished Seatrade Personality of the Year Award at the Seatrade Maritime Awards Asia in 2015. For his valuable contributions and expertise in the Philippine maritime , Mr. Borromeo was honored by the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) with the TIMONEL Maritime Achievement Award in 2014. He currently serves as the Chairman of its Multi-Sectoral Governance Council.

A graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the USA where he earned his Bachelors and Masters Degrees, Mr. Borromeo represents MIT as a Regional Chair and Educational Counselor for the Philippines, while also serving as a member of the Executive Board of MIT’s Sloan School of Management. He was recognized with MIT’s George B. Morgan Award for sustained excellence in educational council activity in 2015 and in 2022 was awarded the Harold E. Lobdell Distinguished Service Award in recognition of his sustained service to MIT and the MIT Alumni Association.

Grunde Løvoll

Principal Researcher, DNV

Grunde Løvoll is senior principal researcher in the ship autonomy team in the Maritime Program in DNV’s strategic research unit. He is currently focusing on methodology and tooling for assurance of autonomous functions in shipping in general, and situational awareness systems for navigation in particular. Grunde is the coordinator of the SAFEMATE project, and holds a Dr.Sc. degree in physics from the University of Oslo. He has a broad research background and have been working in IT and data analytics related projects for more than a decade before joining DNV’s autonomy research team in 2021.

Jacqueline Smith

Maritime Coordinator, International Transport Workers’ Federation

Jacqueline Smith joined the ITF in October 2014 as the Maritime Coordinator.  Prior to joining the ITF Jacqueline had the honour of leading the Norwegian Seafarers’ Union (NSU) and its 11,000 members for almost 8 years.  

Jacqueline became an active member of the NSU in 1992 as a shop steward, securing a collective bargaining agreement for concessionaries, a first for the union.  In 1998 she was elected as a delegate to congress, then as a deputy on the national board, immediately followed by being invited to be the assistant director dealing with cruise ships in Miami, USA.  In 2002 she was asked to stand as elected secretary, so returned to Oslo, Norway.  Jacqueline was then elected NSU president in 2006 and re-elected in 2010.    

Since joining the ITF Jacqueline has continued to strive to ensure that seafarers internationally are covered by collective agreements and that they are upheld and enforced, as well as being totally committed to not losing national cabotage so that national seafarers can continue to operate in their own waters.  As well as supporting seafarers, Jacqueline works with the other maritime sections to improve the working lives of all maritime workers, ensuring minimum standards in global network terminals for dock workers and collective bargaining agreements for dep sea fishers.

In March 2021 Jacqueline became a member of the World Maritime University (WMU) Executive Board.

Jakob Larsen

Head of Maritime Safety and Security, BIMCO

Jakob P. Larsen is the Head of Maritime Safety & Security at BIMCO – the World’s largest association of shipowners with more than 2,100 members globally. Within the scope of his team are all matters related to maritime safety and security, including cyber security.

Jakob’s career began in 1990 in the Danish Navy, where he pursued a seagoing career as navigator and surface warfare officer. Having served in the fleet and subsequently ashore in the Ministry of Defence, Jakob left the Danish Navy in 2010 with the rank Commander to become Maritime Security Officer in BIMCO. After three years in BIMCO, he changed over to Nordic Tankers where he expanded his responsibilities over time to become Head of HSSEQ. In 2015 Jakob went to Maersk Line to become Global Security & Marine QA Manager. In parallel with his tenure at Maersk Line Jakob was elected and served two terms as Chairman of the Security Working Group of the European Community Shipowners’ Associations (ECSA). In 2018, Jakob returned to BIMCO, initially to head the Maritime Security department, and subsequently expanded the scope to also cover maritime safety matters.

Jakob holds several formal qualifications including Master Mariner, Principal Warfare Officer, Joint Command & Staff Course graduate, Company Security Officer/Ship Security Officer, and ISO 9001 lead auditor.
