Dr. Rodríguez Chaves has more than fifteen years of experience working with environmental non-governmental organizations and as an independent consultant on various environmental issues. She has a Law Degree and a Master’s Degree in Environmental Law from the University of Costa Rica; and a PhD from the National University of Ireland, Galway (NUIG) Law School. Currently, she is a consultant to the Interamerican Association for Environmental Defense (AIDA), where she is responsible for coordinating with Latin American countries in the ratification of the new treaty on biodiversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction. Mariamalia is also a senior postdoctoral fellow in the WMU-Sasakawa Global Ocean Institue. She is a member of the Group of Experts of the United Nations Regular Process for Global Reporting and Assessment of the State of the Marine Environment, including Socioeconomic Aspects (Regular Process), and a member of the Legal and Technical Committee of the International Seabed Authority.
La Dra. Rodríguez Chaves tiene más de quince años de experiencia trabajando con organizaciones no gubernamentales ambientales y como consultora independiente en diversos temas ambientales. Tiene una Licenciatura en Derecho y una Maestría en Derecho Ambiental de la Universidad de Costa Rica; y un doctorado en Derecho de la Facultad de Derecho de la Universidad Nacional de Irlanda, Galway (NUIG). Actualmente, trabaja en la Asociación Interamericana para la Defensa del Ambiente (AIDA), donde es responsable de coordinar con los países latinoamericanos la ratificación de un nuevo tratado sobre biodiversidad en áreas fuera de la jurisdicción nacional. Mariamalia también es investigadora postdoctoral senior en el Instituto Oceánico Global WMU-Sasakawa. Además, es miembro del Grupo de Expertos del Proceso Ordinario de las Naciones Unidas para la Presentación de Informes y Evaluación Mundial del Estado del Medio Marino, incluidos los Aspectos Socioeconómicos (Proceso Ordinario) y del Comité Legal y Técnico de la Autoridad de los Fondos Marinos.
