ABSTRACT

Since the ancient times when the female seafarers were believed to bring bad luck, the maritime profession has been seen as a male-dominated area. However, today is the time to break down the prejudices and make women more powerful.
The maritime industry changes with the development of technology and as a result, the duties of the seafarers have changed, as well. In this presentation, I will mention about female seafarers’ current issues and the approach of Shipping 4.0 to these issues. Moreover, I will discuss how these changes will affect the female seafarers how to ensure gender equality by keeping female seafarers up to speed, and what should be done to prevent gender discrimination.
The development and empowerment of female seafarers in this area will be discussed in order to maximize the benefits of technological developments for female seafarers. Since the knowledge is the new power, we need to start with the implementation of education and acquisition in the field.
The conclusions of this research will provide interesting, global and solution-oriented insights with current power of view on the issues. Furthermore, the value of women’s empowerment in the shipping sector will be emphasised, and the attention will be attracted to the actions needed in order to achieve gender equality and to empower more women.
