ABSTRACT

Women have always been underrated as in many male dominant fields like maritime industry. Numbers show that only 2 % of women are active as seafarers in worldwide maritime sector. There is a small but increasing number of women seafarer and maritime women each passing day. This percentage seems to be very low so that the awareness of future maritime women should be empowered by INGO’s, ship owners, crew managers, academics etc. However the workload is equally tough for both women and men on board. Therefore there is considerable amount of maritime women that work in shore-based positions as well as seagoing posts. If truth be told, like in every many male dominant sector, women are considered as hump of the body. The prejudices towards women continues depending on past experiences of ship owners, colleagues, seafarers, crew manning companies, agents, directors. In shore-based positions of different maritime fields such as ship owning companies, ports & terminals, ship agencies, women play an important role in crucial managerial, communicational, analytical level. In this respect, following article will discuss how to increase Awareness of Maritime Women in Turkish Maritime Industry, gender problems, obstacles, and also various dimensions of “Empowering Women in the Maritime Community” suggestions.
