Alf Håkon Hoel is professor of ocean law and policy at the UiT – the Arctic University of Norway (formerly University of Tromsø). His research interests center on international cooperation in the management of living marine resources and recent publications address developments in the Arctic as well as modernization of resource management. Hoel has also been research director at the Norwegian Institute of Marine Research, as well as counselor for oceans and fisheries at the Norwegian embassy in Washington DC. He has also been a member of Norwegian delegations to international fora dealing with marine issues, such as the UN General Assembly, the FAO and the Arctic Council.
