I am a Lieutenant in the Turkish Naval Forces, industrial engineer and maritime security expert holding the position of Guest Lecturer/Visiting Researcher at the Multinational Maritime Security Centre of Excellence (MARSEC COE). My first experience of maritime life came when I was 14 whilst attending Turkish Naval High School. In my Ph.D. thesis, I developed a novel methodology to solve the Mediterranean jurisdiction areas dispute and its maritime security problems sourced from utilizing multiple international relations theories. Prior to joining WMU, I worked in Turkish Naval Forces and Turkish Armed Forces HQ within the fields of communication officer/operations officer in warships, chief of operation office, coastal surveillance commander, maritime safety and accident prevention officer, maritime/naval project officer, crypto-intelligence-counter intelligence-security officer, international security evaluation and analysis officer. I am also two star diver, professional rower (coxless pair) and professional sailor (laser standard). I have been involved in some EU funded FP5, FP6 and FP7 projects including OnTheMosWayNetwork (Motorways of Sea-Safety of LNG ) Project (OTMW-N); Go LNG Project (LNG Infrastructure, Strategic Approach, Maritime Energy Security); Protection Measures for Merchant Ships Project (PROMERC). In 2016, I have been invited to “WMU” and “Multinational Maritime Security Centre of Excellence (MARSEC COE)” to give a series of lectures on “Law of the Sea and Maritime Security” for the second term of “Maritime Law and Policy M.Sc. Class” and on “Maritime Safety” for the third term of “Maritime Safety and Environmental Administration M.Sc. Class”. The lectures series were on Maritime Energy Management, Maritime Energy Security, United Nations Maritime Peacekeeping Operations, Maritime Security Policies and Regulation, Maritime Security Operations, Generic Maritime Security Regulations and Initiatives, Terrorism at Sea, Arms Trafficking and Proliferation at Sea, Piracy, International Ship and Port Security (ISPS) Code, Drug Trafficking by Sea, Human Trafficking (or Illegal Migration) by Sea, Maritime Fraud, Maritime Boundary Delimitation, Pilotage Services, Organization and Operation for Safety of Maritime Traffic, Coastal State Obligations and its Implementation, Management Systems for Safe Efficient and Sustainable Sea Traffic. During my guest lecturer/visiting researcher period, I have been awarded with “United Nations Staff Officer Certificate” by Swedish Armed Forces and “Safety of LNG Handling on Plant, Bunkering Station and On-Board Vessels Certificate” by WMU. Additionally, I have been a member of Scientific Committee and Organizing Committee of some symposiums and conferences led by WMU as well as invited speaker and discussant. (Ongoing: International Conference on Maritime Energy Management (MARENER 2017), World Maritime University/Sweden, 24-25 January 2017) My research work has been published in international refereed scientific journals, books and magazines especially about Maritime Energy Management, International Maritime Security, Sea Power, Naval Force, Maritime Energy Security, Maritime Safety, Arctic Ocean, South China Sea, UN Resolutions, Mixed Migration, Human Trafficking, Migrant Smuggling at Sea, Mediterranean and Middle East/Syria Crisis, Black Sea and Balkans/Ukraine Crisis, Baltic Sea.
