Sindisiwe Chikunga

Deputy Minister of Transport, South African Government

Comrade Sindisiwe Chikunga hails from the Mpumalanga province. Her involvement in politics dates back to her formative years. From the 1980’s to date she held and served in various positions of leadership and responsibility in many African National Congress (ANC) structures, from the ANC Youth league structures – as DCO Makiwane Youth League member in the 1980s, ANC Women’s League and the ANC Mother Body. She played a major role in the realignment of ANC branches during 2001/02. She has been a prominent member of the ANC Women’s League in a position of Regional Secretary in Badplaas Region. She also became the deputy secretary and secretary of the ANC Gert Sibande Region.

Comrade Sindi as she is famously known was the Provincial Executive Committee member in Mpumalanga Province.

In 2004 she was deployed by the African National Congress to serve as a member of parliament in the National Assembly. Her diligent deportment, prominent sharp astuteness, hardworking and political responsiveness have been expressive in the various positions she was appointed to serve in parliament. As a member of parliament for over 10 years, she has been a chairperson of the portfolio committee on police, a whip, and a member of various portfolio committees including and not limited to the:

1.         Portfolio Committee of Correctional Services

2.         Housing- Portfolio Committee

3.         Joint Budget Committee

4.         Joint Standing Committee on Defence

5.         Standing Committee on Auditor General

Deputy Minister Chikunga was appointed in June 2012 to serve as Deputy Minister at National Department of Transport. Her priority areas of responsibilities broadly involve Transport Safety and Security in the Aviation, Maritime, Rail and Road Safety disciplines, transformation and women empowerment.

She currently serves as a council member of the Gert Sibande FET College.

She holds the following qualifications a Master’s degree in Nursing from the University of Pretoria, BA Honours from UNISA, a Diploma in Midwifery and a Nursing Science Diploma both from Edendale Nursing College. She is currently studying Political Science.
