ABSTRACT

This paper aims to present the structure and connections of women’s participation in the maritime community of Brazil. This is an initial research effort in order to provide the academic and public sectors with relevant information, so that experiences can be improved, and problems can be solved. The authors draw on the subject by firstly conceptualizing the meaning of a “maritime community”, which ranges from the civilian to the military groups. We then proceed on mapping the main job positions held by women in each identified area (e.g. shipping and chartering companies, local fishing communities, naval officials etc.). By the method of interview/survey and literature review, it is possible to detect their main difficulties and challenges in working and thriving within an essential masculine environment. This study is especially important to Brazil, a developing country with a historical gender inequality and patriarchal society. It also intends to relate the findings with the progress of UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (particularly numbers 5 and 14) – both within Brazilian institutions and from Brazil’s participation abroad.
