Maritime supply chains are major emitters of greenhouse gases as well as SOx, NOx and Particulate Matter. We study current initiatives to reduce air emissions by global seaports, which are leaders in terms of environmental protection. Extending previous work on private environmental governance in maritime supply chains and maritime energy efficiency, we explain, why some emission reduction tools are currently applied by leading ports, while other tools remain underutilized. Our study shows how tool complexity and issue visibility influence ports’ choice of emission reduction initiatives. We demonstrate a lack of coordination between green port incentive schemes and therefore environmental effectiveness. Furthermore, we demonstrate how ports can contribute to fuel saving and emission reduction from international shipping with virtual arrival schemes. Such systems are currently uncommon and challenges by lack of coordination across supply chains. We conclude with policy recommendations for ports to engage in further coordination of maritime supply chains in order to reduce air emissions.
