Facts findings of energy management and conservation in the Colombo Port
Sri Lanka is compelled to depend on import petroleum products significantly to meet the country’s energy requirement. Meanwhile, consuming of huge volume of fuel and lubricants in addition to Electricity, Colombo port plays a vital role in this context. Major share of the container throughput is handled by the government owned container terminal of the Sri Lanka Ports Authority. It pays approximately 2.5 Billion of Rupees annually to compensate its energy bill and discharging of huge amounts of Co2 and Sox to the environment. To minimize this burning issue, a drastic curtailment of Energy usage and budget is a compulsory requirement today enabling to reduce cost, safe guard energy & foreign reserves and to minimize environment foot prints. This report (study) is mainly focused to identify avenue of energy conservation in operational and engineering activities of container terminal by highlighting identified most significant key events which are not usually realized b Terminal & Admin managers in their day to day routines and Engineering activities of the equipment. Subject to properly guided situations coupled laid down procedures, implementation of this study will helpful to enhance terminal performance by use of proposed concepts in energy conservation with the theme of “Optimum use of each drop of oil to uplift the nation’s quality of life”.
