Naval fleets comprise a number of different combatants - Aircraft Carriers, Cruisers, Destroyers, Frigates, Corvettes, Patrol Vessels and Fleet Tankers, which have a varied range of energy use and pattern. Owing to the unique role performed by the warships, majority of the platforms have high propulsion power and hotel load density requirements, which may or may not be optimised. While warships are mandated to focus on operations rather than the means to achieve them, steps can be instituted to optimise the energy use without compromising on the effectiveness of the naval operations. Energy conservation measures which entail behavioural changes and energy efficient operations through technology insertions can achieve reduction in energy use. The paper aims to address the issues pertaining to baselining of energy use in warships - the  methodologies in vogue, challenges and opportunities for energy management through automation and use of intelligent systems and real time situational awareness tools - aimed at energy efficient operations.
