Application of experimental investigation of forming limit diagrams of Tailor Welded Blanks in ship hull design

Nowadays different industries in respect of improvement in technology and new techniques try to improve their productions. One of these industries are related to sea transportation, which is shipping industry, tries to improve indexes such as decreasing in production costs, increasing in strength in relation to weight , higher product safety and increasing in product weight that can be integrated in Energy Efficiency Design Index(EEDI). Applying the Tailor Welded Blanks technology, provides the possibility of usage of different metal sheets with different kinds, thickness and coatings simultaneously, that is important in order to reduce the weight and design optimization of the product and can be applied in energy consumption purposes.

Although Tailor Welded Blanks(TWB) have many advantages, the problem associated with these sheets are their formability. Therefore, in this research, by the use of experimental methods, the Formability Limit Diagrams (FLD) of TWB with the same materials (st14) and different ratio of thickness of 1.25(0.8mm-1mm), 1.5(0.8mm-1.2mm) and 1.2(1.2mm-1mm) and also FLD of  TWB with the same thickness but  different kinds ( st14 - st37), has been produced. Experimental observation shows that the formability of TWB becomes less than the base metal sheet and in addition the formability of TWB with the ratio of 1.5(0.8mm-1.2mm) is less than the other  TWB of st14 that we used in this experiment, which means formability decreases if the deference of the thickness increases .
